The Edmonton International Airport is the second largest airport in Canada as measured by land mass. It comprises an area of over 7000 acres
The current runways are large enough to accommodate an immediate 200% growth in air traffic movements. 1997 air traffic movements were approximately 118,500 per annum, while annual passenger movements increased to approximately 3.7 million annually, making EIA Canada's fifth largest airport.

Noise Abatement Procedures
Although the noise issue for EIA is minimal when compared to other international airports, Edmonton Airports (EA) has an active Noise Advisory Committee to address noise issues. The membership includes representation from the surrounding communities, airlines, Transport Canada, Nav Canada, and EA Operations staff.
The Noise Advisory Committee is tasked with recommending noise abatement procedures to ensure noise impacts to surrounding communities are minimized while maintaining a 24 hour airport operational capability.
EIA is also protected by a provincial Airport Vicinity Protection Area Regulation which ensures that future development in areas adjacent to Edmonton International Airport is compatible with present and future airport operational growth.
Weather
The Edmonton International Airport has ideal flying conditions year-round. On average, 99% of the year is fog-free. In the last ten years, the runways have been closed only 3 hours due to heavy snow conditions.
An on-site 24 hour meteorological service provides weather observation and information for all major cities worldwide to pilots, air traffic controllers, flight service station staff, and the general public.
